Queen spent "private" Christmas Day with Zara and Mike Tindall to help them during tragedy - Express

The former professional rugby union star opened up on a private moment shared with Queen Elizabeth II two years ago, when the monarch didn’t attend the traditional Christmas Day service because she was under the weather. The couple had also chosen not to go to mass at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham because they were still recovering from a heartbreaking miscarriage, announced in November 2016. Sporting a bright, red patterned suit, in a recent interview Mike recalled the quiet Christmas morning the three of them spent.

Speaking at news website Joe’s chat show House of Rugby, Mike said: “Christmas, two years ago, the wasn"t feeling very well so she didn"t go to church.

“We"d obviously been through what we"d been through with our pregnancy, which we lost, so we did our own little private just as a three.”

To cheer up her wife, Mike opted to wear a festive suit, despite not being sure it would be appropriate.

He continued: "I had a suit on like this and thought "maybe I should be wearing something a little bit different today" but I was trying to raise the mood."

But the Queen, he revealed, “loves bright colours” and encourages people to wear cheerful outfits when appropriate, so she didn"t frown upon the bold choice.

Confirming the monarch’s appreciation for coloured fabrics after decades the public have seen the Queen wearing a range of greens, yellows and purples, Mike said: “The Queen loves bright colours, that’s why she wears all those amazing colours that she does wear, because she thinks dark colours are for sad times.”

Zara’s husband and Princess Anne’s son-in-law also offered a vivid depiction of how busy the festive time in Norfolk is for members of the Royal Family.

After spending this year’s Christmas with his royal in-laws at the Queen’s wintry residence, he recalled how he spiced up the several changes of outfit required by the monarch.

He said: "This year we opened presents on Christmas Eve - I wore one of these.

"And just to give a little punch on Christmas Morning I came down in a different little set up.”

The former rugby player also highlighted how different the Christmases spent with the monarch are from the one he celebrated in Otley, West Yorkshire, when he was growing up.

He said: "It"s quite a strange day as if you"re from up north.

“I usually spend the whole day in my boxer shorts or my tracksuit so by the time I"d have normally got up I"ve been to church twice, which is quite strange for me.

"It"s completely different - I"ve never had to take as many outfits anywhere."
