Royal duty: Harry and William step out of the saddle as Princes restrict polo appearances

The young Princes are avid polo players and are regularly seen taking part in competitive matches in order to raise money for a variety of charities, including Prince Harry’s African charity, Sentebale.

The pair have raised over £10million for charities through the sport since 2007, with money from the 2018 Sentebale Polo Cup being donated to support mental health and wellbeing of children affected by HIV in southern Africa.

The Royal brothers are nevertheless expected to reduce their polo appearances in 2019, as they increase their Royal engagements in support of the Queen, who is gradually scaling down her commitments.

A Royal insider told Vanity Fair: “The big sponsors have been told the princes will be playing fewer games, but want to raise even more money.

“They are setting the bar high.”

Prince Harry has helped raise £5million for Sentebale through the annual Sentebale Polo Cup matches, raising over £770,000 this summer alone.

Malcolm Borwick, ambassador or Royal Salute whiskey, commented on the event to Vanity Fair, said: “It was an incredible amount of money to raise, and this is the sort of money they want to be making through polo from now on.

“We want to help Prince Harry raise £1million per event in the future.”

Commenting on the Princes" reduction in polo commitments, he added: “The issue is they have a limited number of days over the year to play polo in the UK, so they really want to make it count.”

Cathy Ferrier, CEO of Sentebale, underlined the important work the charity is doing to tackle HIV in southern Africa and thanked organisers of the Sentebale Polo Cup for providing invaluable funds for their efforts.

Speaking at the 2018 polo cup, she said: “The funds raised through this annual flagship event remain key to Sentebale achieving our ambitious goals to reach as many young people as possible in southern African with the tools and knowledge they need to know and manage their HIV status.

“We are so grateful to ISPS Handa, our hosts the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club, and to all our fantastic sponsors for making this a day to remember.”

Sentebale is a charity which was founded in 2006 by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in southern Africa.

Prince Harry was most recently seen competing at the Sentebale ISPS Handa Polo Cup at the Royal County of Berkshire Polo Club in July this year.

Prince William also took part in the Audi Polo Challenge at Coworth Park Polo Club in Ascot in June.
