Princess Eugenie"s royal wedding: expectations and "unfair" copycat claims

It"s been a busy year for the British royal family, from the birth of Prince Louis on April 23 to the wedding of Prince Harry to Meghan Markle on May 19.

The second royal wedding of 2018 will take place in just under a fortnight when Princess Eugenie of York marries fiancé Jack Brooksbank.

While not one of the senior royals, on the same level as Prince William, Prince Harry and their wives the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex, respectively, Princess Eugenie"s marriage is still expected to be a grand affair.

But there will be some moments of Déjà vu, 9Honey royal commentator Victoria Arbiter says.

"Overall, you can expect to see a wedding that"s actually quite similar to Harry and Meghan"s and it"s not because, as some of the British presses like to say, that they"re copying cousin Harry but really it comes down to royal tradition, royal ceremony," Victoria tells 9Honey.

"There"s so many rituals encompassed in a royal wedding and I think particularly for Eugenie as well, she grew up, most of her childhood was spent in Windsor."

The couple will tie the knot inside St George"s Chapel, at Windsor Castle, where Prince Harry married Meghan Markle.

A select 1200 members of the public will watch from within the castle grounds – a list chosen from a staggering 10,000 applicants.

"I think you"ll see something certainly very similar to Harry and Meghan"s," Victoria says. "There won’t be the American touches like the gospel choir and the bishop that came from Chicago.

"The carriage procession will be much, much shorter – that"s going to follow a route very similar to what Edward and Sophie [the Earl and Countess of Wessex] did [in 1999]."

According to Buckingham Palace, Eugenie and Jack"s carriage procession will include the grounds of Windsor Castle before entering the town. Their carriage will not journey down the Long Walk, to avoid replicating the Sussex"s procession route in May.

"But in terms of the traditions that you expect from a royal wedding, they"ll be there in abundance," Victoria says.

The 28-year-old bride-to-be has been accused of copying her cousin, with claims Eugenie and Jack are trying to "replicate" key parts of Harry and Meghan"s wedding – and upping the ante with their own two-day extravaganza.

Even Eugenie"s choice of footwear worn during her engagement announcement at Buckingham Palace saw the princess slammed as having "copied Meghan"s look".

"When she chose St George"s Chapel that really was a no-brainer but of course, as Harry and Meghan had already selected it as their venue, it was seen as a bit of a copycat situation," Victoria explains.

"I think Eugenie and [sister] Beatrice are constantly at the brunt of lots of unfair criticism – they"re easy targets and actually they"re both really nice girls - because Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are deeply unpopular with the British public [and] that by extension makes Beatrice and Eugenie quite easy to go after.

Eugenie is the second daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York, and is ninth in line to the throne.

"It seems desperately unfair because really, the girls have just got on with their jobs," Victoria says.

"They"ve shown a lot of respect to the royal family, they show up to everything that they"re expected to be at and yet it"s this constant, constant beating stick from the British press and indeed the world press now.

"So I think in terms of the comparisons with Harry and Meghan"s wedding, it was inevitable because just as Meghan is facing comparisons between her and Kate, royal comparisons are part of the job.

"But yes, I think it has been a little unfair."
