Meghan Markle speaks about Queen in first film since royal wedding

The Queen has been described as both ‘the boss’, ‘a loving grandmother’ and ‘a dedicated guiding force for her family.’

Now a new documentary will see behind-the-scene glimpses of how the monarch passes on her knowledge and experience to younger members of the royal family.

A new ITV series focuses on her role as head of the Commonwealth and look at her interacting with other global leaders as well as the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The two hour-long programmes, entitled Queen of the World, were filmed over the course of a year and also feature footage from the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s private film archives.

It will be new royal Meghan Markle’s first TV interview about her grandmother-in-law.

The series will reflect on the continued importance in which the Queen holds the Commonwealth and how it has grown during her reign.

Its executive producer Nicolas Kent said ‘The Queen is the most well-travelled monarch in history and it’s been fascinating to see how she has passed on her experience to the younger generations of the royal family.

‘With the Duke and Duchess of Sussex about to embark on their first Commonwealth Tour to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific exactly 65 years after the Queen’s first Commonwealth Tour, this series could not be more timely.’

Prince Harry and Meghan – now the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – will head to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga in October.

They will, however, have quite some way to go to beat the monarch’s record of visiting 120 countries throughout her reign.

By the time of her last overseas visit to Malta in 2015, she had clocked up the equivalent miles of flying around the world 42 times.

The Commonwealth grew from the fall of the British Empire after the end of World War Two.

At the time of the Queen’s coronation in 1953, there were just nine members of the Commonwealth.

That has now risen to 53 nations with a total population of 2.4 billion citizens.

Following a summit at Windsor Castle in April the 53 leaders of the Commonwealth member countries announced that the Prince of Wales will succeed the Queen as its next leader.

Meghan had the national flowers of all the 53 members of the Commonwealth embroidered into her veil when she married Prince Harry at Windsor Castle in May.

It was more than 70 years after the Queen had the symbols of the then eight Commonwealth countries sewn into her wedding gown.

The Queen is known to be hands-on in helping her family, especially her grandchildren, learn the ropes of being royal.

Prince Harry has previously admitted being a bit daunted by her status and the amount of travel she has done in her role as head of the Commonwealth.

He told ITV’s Our Queen at Ninety ‘She’s been everywhere, and sometimes that’s quite hard because you go to a place where she hasn’t visited for 20, maybe 15 years, and you think to yourself, how can I ever fulfill this huge expectation that comes with her and being a member of her family?

Recently he has roped in his beloved grandmother to help new wife Meghan make the transition from US actress to working royal.

The Queen has been guiding her about how to meet the public, including the tricky practice of getting into a car, and is said to be supportive over her estrangement from her father Thomas.

Prince William – who called the Queen Gary as a child because he couldn’t say granny – has always had a close relationship with her, particular after the death of Princess Diana.

At her 90th birthday, he said that while she was indeed ‘the boss’ she had proved to be a loving grandmother, a guiding force – and indeed someone who would shout at him when he stepped out of line.
