Why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle"s children won"t be princes or princesses

Time to brush up on your royal knowledge.

One thing particularly interesting about the British royal family are the rules and traditions surrounding royal titles. When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wed on May 19, The Queen gifted them with a Dukedom, with Prince Harry’s titles being The Duke of Sussex, Earl of Dumbarton and Baron Kilkeel. This means Prince Harry is styled as His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex, and Markle is styled as Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. This made us wonder, what will their children be called?

According to royal tradition, should the Duke and Duchess choose to have children, they actually won’t be princes and princesses like Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children. That’s because of a 1917 Letters Patent issued by King George V, which states the following: “…the grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms.”

In other words, it states only the eldest son of the Prince of Wales’s eldest son was to be styled His Royal Highness and a Prince. In case you’re not following, that means that under this decree, only Prince George was meant to be styled as a Prince, with Charlotte and Louis originally destined not to have a royal title – instead they may have received simply Lord and Lady.

However, The Queen issued her own Letters Patent in 2012 that revised King George V’s decree, giving Charlotte and Louis the title of Princess and Prince respectively.

Currently, the decree does not extend to Prince Harry’s children, meaning it’s not a given his children will be prince and princess. Instead, The Queen will have to issue another Letters Patent in order for them to receive a title – which she may do. Seeing as it seems she’s quite fond of Prince Harry and his choice of wife, it may well become a reality.
