Bolasie and Besic could still go on loan in England

For the Football League, the transfer window has closed but the loan window remains open until the end of August. For many clubs, this gives them the chance to fill holes even as the season has already started.

Middlesbrough is one such club, and the Northern Echo has linked them to loan moves for Everton’s Yannick Bolasie and Mo Besic. Each move presents a different challenge for the Smoggies, who on early returns lead the EFL Championship table on a few teams that have a game in hand on them. Boro thinks they have a shot at promotion, and that these two players could put them over the hump.

From the Besic side of things, it is all about wages. Besic was a key player for Boro the last half of last season, but his wages will need to be mitigated if he will continue at the Championship club. Boro probably represents Besic’s best opportunity at regular football this season and I would expect the player to be motivated to get a deal done.

For Bolasie, this is ultimately about level of play. The winger has good reason to be wary of a move to the Championship. He is widely still considered a top flight player and that reputation changing for a 29 year old could alter the direction of the final stage of his career. It’s been a pleasure having his personality and energy at Everton but it’s time for him to move on, and Boro may represent his best chance of remaining a regular player in English football. Of course, he may simply find a top flight option in another country.

Neither player has given Toffee fans a reason to wish them anything but the best. It does not make the slightest difference to me whether Boro gets what they want and/or has a good year but if they represent the best move for these two players I would be happy to see them make it.
