Kate Middleton was noticeably missing from yet another royal event today, but for good reason. The Duchess of Cambridge did not attend the 2018 Order of the Thistle because she is still on maternity leave.

Middleton gave birth to Prince Louis, her third child with Prince William, just two months ago on April 23, and has chosen to step away from her royal duties. Aside from caring for a newborn, the 36-year-old is spending time with her two other young children, Prince George, who turns 5 this month, and Princess Charlotte, 3.

Since giving birth, Middleton has skipped out on attending the 2018 Royal Ascot and did not accompany her husband Prince William on a landmark trip to Jordan. During the trip, William vouched for his wife and shared why she was "very upset" to not be there with him.

"[Kate is] very sorry she cannot be here with me so soon after the birth of our son Louis [on April 23], but her family remembers very fondly the almost three years she spent here as a child when her father worked for British Airways in Amman," he explained.

The Order of the Thistle ceremony is held in Edinburgh, Scotland to celebrate knighthood—the highest public-office honor in Scotland—and takes place every other year. The Duchess of Cambridge did not participate in 2016 either.

The last time the Duchess attended an Order of the Thistle service was in 2012. She wore a beautiful primrose yellow Emilia Wickstead coat for the event, according to Vanity Fair. The royal family"s official website states that the knights and ladies dress in green velvet robes for a ceremony at the Thistle Chapel in St Giles" Cathedral, where new members are installed by Queen Elizabeth II.

This year, Middleton was not the only member of the British royal family to miss the event. Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall are currently on a royal tour of Wales, and Prince Philip resigned from all of his royal public duties last August. However, Prince William and Princess Anne were there to walk beside the Queen in their green velvet garbs.
